How do I know if this is right for me?
Trust us. It is. The best thing about CrossFit is that each movement and every workout is scalable. This means we are able to customize the WOD to your level of fitness and skill. As you get more comfortable with the movements and your body adapts to the rigors of CrossFit, the weight load will start to increase and we’ll dial up the intensity of your movements. The needs of world class athletes and our grandparents differ in degree, not kind. As such, CrossFit is a very effective fitness regimen for all types of people willing to challenge themselves.
What’s a WOD?
The WOD is the Workout of the Day. One is always available on the main site at www.CrossFit.com as well as here at CrossFit Northland. There may be multiple WODs happening in the same day at CFN (conditioning WOD, strength WOD, etc.) Please check with your coaches to determine your workout on any given day.
I’m willing to push myself, but I’ve never heard of half of these lifts. Why do we do these lifts as opposed to the others I’ve actually heard of?
Good question. The inclusion of the Olympic lifts (snatches, cleans, presses, etc.) is due almost completely to their explosive nature. Pound for pound, Olympic lifters are the most explosive athletes on the planet. Their abilities to move large amounts of weight from one place to another and doing it quickly is unparalleled. These lifts are included in CrossFit because they are largely functional in nature. We are training for the unknown. We will be called upon, at some point, to move a lot of weight from one point to another. And Olympic lifts really address that need.
Am I going to end up looking like a bodybuilder? I just want to get fit.
Likely not. You will lose weight and gain muscle mass. The nature of CrossFit workouts lean on high reps and low weight. In fact, a lot of the exercises will use the worker’s own body weight as resistance. Occasionally you will be presented with a WOD that asks you to do a one rep max for a particular lift. There will be days when we do fewer reps at heavier weights and that approach will cause us to build more muscle which in turn will burn body fat. CrossFitstays away from isolated muscle movements and focuses instead on multi-joint lifts, lifts that use several muscle groups in concert to achieve a desired effect. The way we train at CrossFit will not turn you into a body builder. You’ll lean down and muscle up and your spouse will find you more attractive, but you probably won’t be posing down and oiling up any time soon.
I have a bad back, bad knees, bad shoulder, etc. Can I do this?
Yes. All the workouts can be scaled to your strengths as well as your limitations. We will strengthen your weak areas. In fact, we think that by training your weakest areas, your strengths get stronger. As we train your physical capabilities will progress quickly. If you are limited by a serious injury, we can still create workouts for you based on your capabilities. Through CrossFit’s model of training functional movements and using proper technique including a full range of motion, we’re confident we can get you back to your pre-injury self.
Why are your prices so much higher than other gyms in Kansas City?
This is a fair question. But in fairness, you can’t really compare CrossFit with any regular commercial workout facility. Our trainers are with you each day throughout your entire workout. And they program your workout based on you and your general physical capability. Essentially each of your workouts is done with a personal trainer. Most personal trainers are between $50-$100 an hour. And you pay a membership fee on top of that. For the attention you get and the results you see, our prices are very reasonable. And, we’re the cheapest CrossFit affiliate in the KC Metro area.
